Bakersfield Jam News Release

(Bakersfield, Calif. - February 6, 2010) - Bakersfield Jam guard/forward Reece Gaines may not have had his best game of the season, but the veteran pro scored on a driving layup with 6.6 seconds remaining in overtime and added a free throw to complete the old-fashioned three-point play and give the Jam a two-point lead that held up for a hard-fought 112-111 victory.

Gaines (7 points, 7 assists) struggled through his worst shooting performance of the season but validated Coach Will Voigt's faith in him as a team leader when he took a pass from Keith Brumbaugh and finished at the rim despite contact from Tulsa's Latavious Williams. 66ers guard Mustafa Shakur drew a foul on the ensuing possession but was unable to convert his second free throw, and Marcus Lewis had his put-back attempt blocked by John Edwards as time expired.

In addition to grabbing his first double-double as a member of the Jam, Edwards (19 points, 10 rebounds) also had the game-tying bucket at the end of regulation as he tossed in a six-footer to even the score at 101. But it was Jeremy Wise who led the Jam's charge throughout the bulk of the game, scoring a game-high 26 points while shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line, not to mention seven assists, three steals and only two turnovers.

Shakur struggled from the field but still managed to flirt with a triple-double, finishing with 22 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in the loss. Larry Owens matched Wise's 26 points, and Latavious Williams - the first player in NBA D-League history to make the jump directly from high school - had an impressive night, scoring 19 points on 9-for-14 shooting and pulling down seven rebounds. Cecil Brown was the only other 66er in double-digits, dropping 18 points to go with nine assists and five rebounds.

The Bakersfield bench gave the team a huge lift, outscoring their Tulsa counterparts 33-18 led by another impressive effort by Will Daniels (19 points, 6 rebounds) whose defense and hustle kept him on the floor for 30 minutes. Keith Brumbaugh also had a solid night for the Jam, contributing 16 points and seven rebounds to the cause before finding Gaines for the game-winner.

The Jam will head to Dakota next, where they play a Tuesday-Wednesday doubleheader against the Wizards. Tulsa stays on the west coast, with Monday and Wednesday games against the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
