LONG BEACH, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2005) â The Long Beach Jam (18-10) of the American Basketball Association (ABA) rolled to an easy 117-102 victory over the Los Angeles Stars (13-12) in front of a crowd of 1,874 at the Pyramid in Long Beach.
The Jam tied a franchise record by winning a season-high seven games in a row. The Jam opened the 2003-04 campaign by winning their first seven games.
The Jam jumped to an 18-2 lead at the game's outset, and finished the first quarter up 25-15. As a team, the Jam out-rebounded the Stars 24-7 in the quarter. Ronnie Coleman led the attack in the first 12 minutes, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. He finished the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
In the second quarter, Long Beach led by as many as 21 points. Derrick Dial scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the frame, helping the Jam to a 56-38 halftime lead.
Los Angeles' Will Burr scored 16 of his 21 points in the third quarter, but Long Beach pushed its lead to 92-70 to end the stanza. The Jam lead by as many as 27 points in the quarter.
The closest the Stars came to the Jam was the 15-point spread at the final buzzer. The Jam out-rebounded the Stars 74-45 for the game.
John Mastrocola of the Friends of the Diabetes Association logged one minute of game time as the Jam's 11th man. Mastrocola missed both shots he took.
Dennis Rodman did not play due to slight tendonitis in his knees. Rodman is expected back for the playoffs.
Before today's game, the doctors of St. Mary Medical Center defeated the Friends of the Diabetes Association in a full-court battle, 50-42.
The Jam's next home game is a first-round playoff game March 6 at 2 p.m. at the Pyramid. If the Jam win that game, the team will host a second-round game either March 11 or March 13.
