Jam get Crushed
December 19, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Maywood Laguneros News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. (Dec. 19, 2004) â The Long Beach Jam (7-3) of the American Basketball Association (ABA) started slowly and never found their rhythm Sunday in a 142-110 defeat at the hands of the Orange County Crush (6-1) at the Pyramid in Long Beach in front of a crowd of 1,176.
The Jam were down double digits in the first quarter but rallied to bring the score to 31-30 with a Kueth Duany three-pointer as time ran out. But Orange County pulled away as the game progressed, outscoring the Jam by 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Ramel Curry nearly recorded a triple-double for the Jam with 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Maurice Spillers added 23 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Derrick Dial and Fred Vinson both scored 27 points and Damian Cantrell chipped in 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Crush.
The Jam's Felipe Lopez did not play due to a stomach virus. Jam Head Coach Nate "Tiny" Archibald was ejected with 1:34 remaining in the second quarter.
Nick Sheppard returned to the Jam lineup Sunday to grab five rebounds in limited playing time. With the aid of a wheelchair, Lenny Cooke joined his teammates on the bench. Sheppard and Cooke were involved in a car accident Dec. 8. Cooke, who broke his left leg in two parts, was released from Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles this week.
All season long, celebrities, members of the media and special guests will suit up with the Jam for one game, donning the No. 11. Each will be a member of the team's roster for that game and are eligible to play. Today Dr. Clayton Dejong, M.D. of St. Mary Medical Center joined the team.
The Jam have road games against Orange County Dec. 22 and Fresno Dec. 31 before returning home Sunday, Jan. 2 at the Pyramid at 2 p.m. to face Los Angeles.
