
Jake Whittaker of Sierra Vista High School wins Gladiators\' Ironman Award

Las Vegas, NV, October 28, 2004 â The Las Vegas Gladiators, in partnership with News 3's "Operation: Football" and US Army, awarded Jake Whittaker of Sierra Vista High School the Gladiators' Ironman Award for the ninth week of the 2004 high school football season.
The Gladiators and US Army, will honor Whittaker by making a $250 donation to the Sierra Vista High School athletic department.
In Sierra Vista's seventh win of the season, the junior quarterback led the Mountain Lions to a 28-0 victory over Durango High School on Friday, October 22. Whittaker threw for 169 yards and had one touchdown pass. He also rushed the ball for 39 yards with two touchdowns. On the season, he has passed for 865 yards with eight touchdown passes and rushed for 98 yards with six touchdowns.
Whittaker also excels off the field well as he holds a 3.5 GPA.
This award recognizes student-athletes who have achieved both on the playing field and in the classroom. These achievements are reflective of the players in the AFL, where the majority of the athletes have skills as two-way performers.
Athletes are nominated for the award by their respective schools based on their weekly performance. Winners are recognized with a certificate presentation at their school with Gladiators' head coach Ron James and News 3 sports anchors Mitch Roberts or Rick Strasser. The presentation is featured on News 3 each week.
The US Army provides direction for detailed planning, preparation and execution of the full range of tasks necessary to provide relevant and ready landpower to the Nation while maintaining the quality of the all-volunteer force.
