Dallas Desperados News Release
In their quest for an ArenaBowl championship, the Dallas Desperados continued to make free agent moves as they announced the signing four and re-signing their kicker Thursday. Dallas added OL/DL James Cannida, OL/DL Terrance Dotsy, FB/LB Jason Ferguson, WR/LB Rob Johnson and WR/LB James Williams. The club also re-signed K Carlos Martinez who originally signed with Dallas midway through the 2004 campaign.
Cannida (6-2, 315, Nevada-Reno) comes to Dallas as an AFL rookie with five seasons of NFL experience, playing four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one with the Indianapolis Colts. In 50 games at defensive tackle, he registered 32 stops. He was a four-year starter at the University of Nevada-Reno picking up 208 total tackles, 17 sacks and two forced fumbles through his collegiate career.
Dotsy (6-3, 300, Cal-Berkeley) finished his rookie year of indoor football with the Quad City Steamwheelers of af2. He started 15-of-16 contests along the offensive and defensive line and finished with 5.5 tackles, two sacks and two tackles for losses. In Dallas, he will be reunited with former Steamwheeler head coach, Rich Ingold, Dallas's offensive coordinator.
Ferguson (6-3, 275, Emporia State) played in 16 games for the af2's Louisville Fire. He finished the year with 11 tackles, four sacks, three tackles for losses, seven hurries and a forced fumble. He signed to the Grand Rapids Rampage practice squad for the 2002 season.
Johnson (6-2, 210, Western Illinois) will look to make a name for himself in the AFL arriving in Dallas as a rookie with NFL and CFL experience. He spent part of the 2002 NFL season on the Carolina Panthers practice squad but was released prior to their 2003 training camp. He signed with the Green Bay Packers but was injured in preseason and placed on reserve/injured through week four before being released. He made his professional debut with the Calgary Stampede of the CFL in 2002 and posted 34 receptions for 595 yards and two touchdowns.
Williams (6-0, 198, Marshall) comes to Dallas as an AFL rookie with three seasons of NFL experience. He was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. In three seasons with Seattle, he caught 20 passes for 410 yards and a touchdown.
Martinez (5-8, 180, Buena Vista) signed with Dallas April 23, 2004 after the team suffered through a kicking slump in the beginning of the season. Martinez, a rookie to the AFL, stepped in and connected on 30-of-34 point after attempts and three-of-10 field goals, including a long of 54.
