Jake Bergey Returns to Wings via Trade and Officially Retires
February 5, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
Philadelphia Wings legend Jake Bergey officially announces he has retired from the National Lacrosse League. In order to officially retire as a Wings player, the organization reacquired Bergey from the Boston Blazers in exchange for a conditional draft should he be activated to an NLL roster. Bergey, who played all 10 seasons in the NLL with the Wings, was acquired by Boston in the 2008 expansion draft, but never played a game for the team.
"I approached Wings GM Lindsay Sanderson and owner Russ Cline and told them it was time for me to retire and they thought is was appropriate for me to retire in Philadelphia," said Bergey. "I am happy the Wings management was able to work out a deal that brought me back to the organization where I spent all 10 years of my career. Wings fans are the absolute best and I can't thank them enough for all their support over my career."
Bergey finished his renowned NLL career with 256 goals and 301 assists. He is second on the Wings all-time in goals, assists, and total points (557). In 2008, Jake helped lead the team to their first playoff appearance since 2002 and was second on the team in both goals (29) and points (60), despite coming off a knee injury.
Bergey was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the fifth round of the 1998 NLL Entry Draft out of Salisbury State University. He is part of a family of famous Philadelphia athletes, as he is also the son of Philadelphia Eagles legendary linebacker Bill Bergey.
The Wings will play their next game at home against the defending NLL Champion Buffalo Bandits on Dollar Dog Night at the Wachovia Center on Friday, February 6 at 8 p.m. Guarantee great seats for Dollar Dog Night and the rest of 2009 by calling (215) 389-WING (9464) or visit WingsLAX.com.
