New York's Casey Powell named January Player of the Month
February 5, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
New York Titans forward Casey Powell has been named Overall Player of the Month, while Boston Blazers forward Daryl Veltman has earned Rookie of the Month honors for January.
Powell leads the NLL in goals (19) and points (38) through five games, and is also fourth in assists with 19. His efforts have helped New York to a 3-2 record, good for second place in the East Division. The 32-year-old forward is currently on pace to record 122 points, which would break fellow Syracuse alum Gary Gait's single-season record of 115.
Veltman, who was selected first overall out of Hobart College in the 2008 NLL Entry Draft, has been extremely valuable in his five games for the expansion Boston Blazers. The 23-year-old forward leads all rookies in goals (11), assists (15) and points (26), and has helped Boston to a 2-3 record in January, good for third place in the East.
The Weekly Player Awards are determined by a vote of the General Managers and Head Coaches of the league's 12 teams.
