Jacobsen Pitches Curve Past Bowie, 4-2

(BOWIE, MD)- Landon Jacobsen allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings and Josh Bonifay went 3-for-3 with a home run as the Curve defeated the Bowie Baysox 4-2 on Wednesday night at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, MD.
The win on the final day of April evens the Curve's overall record at 12-12 and moves the club to within one game of a logjam for first place in the Eastern League's Southern Division standings
Jacobsen (3-1) retired the first 14 batters he faced in the contest and cruised to his third win in his first five Double-A outings. The right-hander out of South Dakota walked just one and struck out four in earning his second win in as many starts against Bowie. Including the five shutout innings he tossed on April 18th, Jacobsen is now 2-0 with an 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12 IP) against the Baysox this season.
Also, his ERA, which was fourth-best in the Eastern League entering the day at 1.43, now sits at 1.37 after five starts.
"Just seeing him for the first time in spring training, to be honest with you, I wasn't very impressed," said Curve manager Dale Sveum of Jacobsen. "But what he's done has just been phenomenal."
"He's been our best, most consistent pitcher," Sveum added. "To sit here and say that I would have guessed that would obviously be wrong."
The Curve opened the scoring in the third inning against Bowie right-hander Juan Rosario, who entered the game with a 9.95 ERA in his first four starts. With two outs and Kevin Nicholson at second base, Jose Castillo ripped a double to the left-centerfield wall that scored Nicholson and gave the Curve a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Brett Roneberg came through with an RBI single scoring Castillo.
The Curve took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning when Nicholson doubled home Bonifay, who had reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error by Rosario.
After Bowie scraped together a run off of Jacobsen in the sixth, Bonifay provided a critical insurance run in the top of the next inning when the right-hander blasted an opposite field solo homer to give the Curve a 4-1 lead. It was Bonifay's third dinger of the season.
The Baysox brought the tying run to the plate three times in the eighth and ninth innings, and did manage to score a run on a Todd Ozias wild pitch, but Ozias tossed a scoreless inning and a third to notch his fourth save and second in two days.
Rosario (0-3) took the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits in six innings of work. Left-hander John Parrish kept the Baysox in the game in the final three innings, tossing three scoreless frames.
The Curve will look for the three-game sweep on Thursday when left-hander Mike Connolly takes the mound against Bowie right-hander, and former Orioles' first round pick, Mike Paradis. Gametime is set for 7:05 p.m.
