San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 25, 2002) – San Jose SaberCats lineman Joe Jacobs was today named the Arena Football League's ‘ADT' Defensive Player of the Week after his performance against the New York Dragons on Saturday, June 22.

Jacobs (6-3, 276, Utah State), a six-year AFL veteran lineman, earned the weekly award by recording two solo tackles (including one tackle for loss), an interception, and a sack to help lead the undefeated SaberCats to their 10th straight win, a 65-41 victory over the New York Dragons.

The former All-Ironman and All-Arena performer is currently the league's career leader in tackles for loss (26.5) and is tied for second on the SaberCats in sacks (2.0) this season. This award marks the second time that Jacobs has garnered league-wide weekly recognition in his career.

Jacobs, a former Benicia High School standout, joins teammates Barry Wagner, Bob McMillen and Sam Hernandez as league weekly award winners this season.

The SaberCats look to continue their perfect season when they travel to Dallas for a Western Division showdown with the 6-4 Desperados on Saturday, June 29. The team returns to the Compaq Center for its 2002 regular season finale on Friday, July 5 against the Indiana Firebirds. Tickets for that game are available and can be purchased at all Northern California TicketMaster locations or at the Compaq Center ticket office.
