
Jacobs Earns Rookie Honors

PORTLAND, April 30, 2008 - Portland LumberJax forward Peter Jacobs has been named the National Lacrosse League's Rookie of the Week and the Rookie of the Month, the league announced today. In the final week of the regular season, Jacobs scored a career-high four goals in Buffalo against the East Division Champion Bandits. The four goals scored were a franchise-high for a rookie and earned the NLL's youngest player weekly honors. For the month of April, the Akwesasne, Ontario product scored seven goals and added eight assists for 15 points. Jacobs scored at least three points in four of Portland's five April games.
"At 18-years-old Peter plays like a veteran who has been in the league for a long time", said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "He continues to improve each game and there's no better example than his four goal performance in Buffalo."
Jacobs finished the 2008 regular season with 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points. In his NLL debut in a 14-11 loss to the New York Titans on Jan. 12, he scored one goal and added two assists before his season took off from there.
After appearing in five of the first 10 games, Jacobs played in Portland's final six regular season games as the Jax battled for the final playoff spot in the West. In those six games, which began with a one goal, two assist performance in a 16-15 win over the Colorado Mammoth on Mar. 20, Jacobs scored 18 of his 23 points.
"Peter's a very gifted and intelligent player, but most importantly, he works extremely hard at making himself better," added Keenan.
Jacobs becomes the first rookie since former forward Jed Prossner to earn rookie of the week honors for the Jax. Jacobs is also the first rookie since defenseman Brodie Merrill to earn the rookie of the month accolade.
The weekly and monthly player awards are determined by a vote of the General Managers and Head Coaches of the league's 12 member clubs.
