
NLL announces April Player and Rookie of the Month plus Weekly Awards

The National Lacrosse League has announced the winners of the weekly player awards for the final weekend of the regular season (April 25-27) as well as the Player and Rookie of the Month Award winners for the month of April.

Overall Player of the Week honors go to forward Jim Veltman of the Toronto Rock, who played the final game of a legendary 16-season career this past weekend. Veltman scored a goal, tallied four assists, and scooped up 17 loose balls in a 15-14 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.
Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares was named Offensive Player of the Week following an eight-point (4 G, 4A) performance in a 14-10 win over Portland on Saturday.
New York Titans defenseman Greg Peyser won the Defensive Player of the Week award after holding Rochester's John Grant to one goal in a 12-11 New York win on Saturday. Peyser also added a goal and an assist, and picked up 13 loose balls.
Brad Self of the Chicago Shamrox was named Transition Player of the Week. Self scored five goals, tallied five assists and picked up 13 loose balls over two games this past weekend as Chicago earned a split against Minnesota, a 12-10 win on Friday and a 12-11 loss on Saturday.
Rookie of the Week honors went to Peter Jacobs of the Portland LumberJax. The rookie forward scored four goals and picked up four loose balls in Portland's 14-10 loss at Buffalo on Saturday.
April Player & Rookie of the Month Awards
Philadelphia Wings forward Athan Iannucci is the league's Player of the Month for April. In six games played, Iannucci scored 25 goals, dished out ten assists and picked up 45 loose balls as the Wings went 3-3 and clinched their first playoff berth since the 2002 season. Iannucci finished the season with 71 goals, setting a new league record for most goals scored in a single season.
Portland LumberJax forward Peter Jacobs is the league's Rookie of the Month for April. In five games played, Jacobs scored seven goals, tallied eight assists and picked up 23 loose balls. Portland went 2-3 during the month and was able to clinch a playoff berth in the West Division.
The Weekly and Monthly Player Awards are determined by a vote of the general managers and head coaches of the League's 12 member clubs.
The 2008 regular season concluded on April 27. The Playoffs begin this weekend with the four Divisional Semifinals games, to be played this weekend (May 2-4). The Playoffs will take place over the next three weekends, leading up to the 2008 Edge NLL Championship Game on the weekend of May 16-18. Please visit www.NLL.com for more information.
