Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - Looking to build upon an unforgettable home debut on Saturday night, the Erie Otters returned home on Friday night to take on a highly-touted and dangerous Flint Firebird team. Coming in with a 2-2 record, Flint would look for consistency in their first American battle of the year. On the Erie side, the team would be missing key pieces in Goaltender Nolan Lalonde (lower body injury), Sam Alfano (non-COVID-related illness), and Owain Johnston (upper body injury), Erie would turn to the season-debuts of Cameron Lowe and recently injury-recovered George Alboim to fill the void. Making his fifth-appearance of the season in net would be Goaltender Marshall Nicholls, who would look to pick up his first win of the year.
The first half of period one would be a truly back-and-forth one, as either teams' defense would be able to stop whatever came near the net front. After a successfully killed penalty, Erie would suffer their first mistake of the night, as former Otter-prospect Alex Bradshaw (1) would score his first-career Ontario Hockey League goal to make it 1-0 Flint. An unsuccessful Otter power play would cap off the first period, as Erie trailed 1-0, outshooting Flint 12-8.
Flint would start to flex their proverbial muscles in the second period, as Amadeus Lombardi (2) would score just 1:45 into the new frame to make it 2-0 Flint. Minutes later, Lombardi would be stopped on a penalty shot attempt by Marshall Nicholls, and it would remain a 2-0 game. With less than a handful of shots early into the game, Carey Terrance (2) would strike for the Otters on the power play to make it a one goal game in the late frame. In the five minutes that would follow, Brennan Othmann (5,6) and Tristan Bertucci (1) would double the Firebirds' goals, making it 4-1 after two.
Down by a trio in the third, bad would get to worse as Ethan Hay (1,2) would score his first of two in the period to make it 5-1. Othmann would net yet another off a bad-bounce from the backboards, and Erie would suddenly trail 7-1 following Hay's second 7:29 in. Rookie Goaltender Jacob Gibbons would get his first chance to appear in an OHL game in the second half of the third. Gibbons would stop 12/13 - allowing just a perfect-pass-goal by Riley Piercey (4) - and look sharp in what for him would be an unforgettable night. Erie would fall in the contest 8-1, being outshot 38-27.
The weekend closes on Saturday night as the Otters host the Saginaw Spirit for Tiki Luau Night - the first 1000 fans in attendance will receive a free Otters Beach Towel (pres. by Rebich Investments). Puck drop is slated for 7:00 P.M. from the Erie Insurance Arena. Erie remains at home for six of their next nine games.
