Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Game Notes, April 7 vs. Jackson

April 7, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp will complete Saturday's suspended game with the Jackson Generals at 3:05 p.m. before playing Sunday's regularly scheduled contest as a seven-inning affair to follow. Gates open at 2 p.m. on Sunday for the first Baptist Health Sunday Family FUNday of the season. Sunday's contest is also Kids Opening Day, as the Jumbo Shrimp will welcome kids to take over the ballpark. From a ceremonial first pitch to singing the National Anthem, taking out the lineup card at home plate, guest public address announcing and emceeing and leading the Launch-A-Ball countdown, the Jumbo Shrimp will make sure their first Sunday home game is all about kids.

SATURDAY'S GAME SUSPENDED DUE TO RAIN

Rain and inclement weather suspended Saturday's game between the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and Jackson Generals with the Generals ahead 1-0 in the top of first inning. The game will resume at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday with Sunday's scheduled contest to be played as a seven-inning affair immediately after. Jeffrey Baez notched an RBI single to make it 1-0 Jackson with one out in the first. After a walk, the game went into delay before getting suspended. When play resumes on Sunday, the Generals will start with runners on first and second and one out.

SHRIMP ON THE BARBIE

Jacksonville was able to come away with a win Friday despite stranding 12 men by going just 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position. The Jumbo Shrimp are just 1-for-22 (.045/.154/.045) with ducks on the pond through two games. The good news is that, throughout every single level in the history of baseball, situational hitting numbers normalize with bigger sample sizes as the season goes on. For example, the 2018 Jumbo Shrimp hit .224/.317/.350 (.367 OPS) with runners in scoring position, almost exactly akin to their overall batting line of .235/.312/.361 (.673 OPS).

'PEN PALS

The Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen on Friday was able to negate the club's offensive struggles in earning Jacksonville's first win of the season. After Jorge Guzman fired five innings of one-run ball, Brett Graves, Dylan Lee, Kyle Keller and Elvis Araujo combined to toss seven shutout frames. The quartet ceded just one hit and two walks while fanning nine. Through a pair of games thus far, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has fanned 15 against three free passes while working to a 0.75 ERA.

ASSISTANTS TO THE REGIONAL MANAGERS

In addition to manager Kevin Randel, Jacksonville's coaching staff includes pitching coach Bruce Walton, hitting coach Sean Berry, defensive coach Jose Ceballos and bullpen coach Esmerling De La Rosa. Athletic trainer Alan Rail and strength, conditioning coach Brady Fitzgerald and video/advance manager Bryan Rogers round the Jumbo Shrimp's field staff.

WORLD'S BEST BOSS

Kevin Randel will manage the Jumbo Shrimp during the 2019 season, marking his third different stint in Jacksonville. The Marlins' 13th-round pick in 2002, Randel played seven seasons in the club's minor league system, batting .253/.371/.426 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs in 123 games in 2009 with Jacksonville. He later returned to the First Coast to serve as Jacksonville's hitting coach from 2012-14. The 2019 season is Randel's fifth as a skipper in Miami's organization, with the Wilmington, N.C. native having served as the pilot of then-Low-A Greensboro in 2015-16 and High-A Jupiter throughout 2017-18. Randel is 254-296 (.462) so far in his managerial career.

APRIL SHOWERS

Jacksonville has not had a winning record in the month of April since the 2013 season, when the club went 14-10 en route to a 73-63 (.547) campaign. Over the last five Aprils, Jacksonville is 54-63 (.462) in the schedule's opening month. In comparison, from the beginning of the Marlins era on the First Coast, which dates to the start of the 2009 season, through 2013, Jacksonville suffered through just one losing month of April. Over those five years, they were 65-50 (.561) in the campaign's lid-lifting month.

NOTHING BUT TROUBLE

Jacksonville is hoping that their 5-0 defeat to Jackson in their 2019 season opener on Thursday is not a continuation of an issue from last season. The Jumbo Shrimp had the Southern League's worst record in shutouts in 2018, finishing just 4-16 (.200). The club's 16 blankings were the most in the circuit since Jackson suffered 21 shutouts in 2015 and represent Jacksonville's second-most during the club's Miami Marlins era, which dates back through the start of the 2019 season (20, 2013).

SHRIMP SCOPES

Jacksonville's pitching staff registered 16 strikeouts on Friday. The Jumbo Shrimp had just three games throughout the 2018 season with more than that total. The club's 28 strikeouts this year leads the Southern League through two games... The Jumbo Shrimp held Jackson to just 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position in Friday's 2-1 Jacksonville victory. The Generals left 10 runners on base.
