Macon Trax News Release
[Macon, Ga.]âThe Jacksonville Barracudas erased a two goal third period deficit, to claim the WHA2's Championship for 2003-2004. Behind strong goaltending from Randy Hevey the âCudas won 7-4 in Macon Friday night.
Things looked good for the Trax at the end of the second period and early in the final frame. After taking a 3-2 lead into the locker room after 40 minutes, the Trax stormed out early in the third.
Luke Murphy gave the Trax a two goal lead at the 3:32 mark. It was Murphy's third goal of the playoffs and brought the 2,712 fans at the Centreplex to their feet.
The Jacksonville comeback came right after Andy Kollar collided with the post. Kollar was slow getting up as it appeared that he re-injured his neck.
The Barracudas smelled blood and peppered Kollar with five unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes. Mark Phenow and Mike Wirll tied the game up with goals at the 9:32 and 11:13 marks respectively.
Chris Hackett took over for three minutes late in the game. At the 12:43 he lit the lamp for what would be the championship clinching goal. For good measure he added his second goal of the game at the 15:15 mark. Klage Kaebel finished the scoring with an empty net goal with 20 seconds remaining.
The Trax came from behind in the second period to tie the game and eventually take the lead. John Gurskis, Matt Brown, and David Deeves tallied goals in the middle period to give the Trax their lead.
Despite the spur ending the Trax look ahead to a bright off season. Macon will return to the ice for their third season this coming fall. For all the off-season information keep your computer logged into www.macontrax.com.
