Jacks to Hold Muskegon Winter Showcase

February 15, 2011 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

Hundreds of aspiring skaters will be playing in the barn they hope to someday call home, when the Muskegon Lumberjacks host the 2011 Muskegon Winter Showcase from Friday through Sunday, Feb. 25-27, at the L.C. Walker Arena.

"We're very pleased and excited for Muskegon to host a showcase like this, with so many quality players looking to take the next step," Lumberjacks President Tim Taylor said. "Our organization is looking to grow the game of hockey in Muskegon while positively impacting our local economy. This is an example of events that are tailor-made for such a purpose."

"This event gives us an opportunity to showcase our community to hundreds of visitors," said Jill Emery, tourism manager with the Muskegon County Convention and Visitors Bureau. "These individuals will be shopping in our stores, eating in our restaurants and sleeping in our hotels.

Certainly our hope and belief is that they will sincerely enjoy their time here in Muskegon during the showcase and will come back in the future."

Ten Midget Major teams - including that of Ontario's Hill Academy - will take part in the three-day event. Each club will play one game on Friday sometime between noon and 6 p.m., two on Saturday, and a fourth and final game on Sunday. Admission to the showcase will be free, and the games will take place at both the arena and Lakeshore Sports Centre. Concessions will be available.

The teams, the very cream of the crop of the AAA hockey world, will include Belle Tire, Compuware, Honeybaked, Little Caesars, Victory Honda, Philadelphia Revolution, Lansing Capitals, TPH Thunder, Hill Academy and Capital City Pride.

Six skaters in the Lumberjacks' system play for the Compuware and Victory Honda squads. Lance Fredrickson, Garrett Cockerill and Joseph Cox will skate for Compuware. Michael McNicholas, Josh Henke and Max Shuart will skate for Victory Honda.

"I am honored and pleased that so many top programs would want to come play here in Muskegon," Lumberjacks Owner and CEO Josh Mervis said. "It tells us that knowledgeable people in the hockey world see and appreciate what we are building in Muskegon."

The Jacks are seeking volunteers for the event, and anyone who helps out will receive a free ticket to a Lumberjacks game that weekend. The Jacks will host the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday night, and welcome the Chicago Steel on Saturday. Both games feature a 7:15 p.m. puck drop. Call (231) 726-3879 for tickets or for more information on volunteering.
