Odessa Jackalopes News Release
SHREVEPORT, LA - The Odessa Jackalopes winning streak ended at three games on Friday night as the Jackalopes (7-9-1) fell to the Shreveport Mudbugs (9-8-2) 4-3 at the Hirsch Coliseum.
Both teams came into Friday's game riding streaks, the Jacks were on a three game wining streak while the Mudbugs were win-less in their last four.
After a scoreless first period, the Bugs got on the board first as Shreveport capitalized on a power play opportunity. Jay Feiwell was able to slip a shot low passed Jacks goaltender Kade Phipps to give the Mudbugs a 1-0 lead. It was the first power-play goal the Bugs had scored in their last 21 attempts.
The home team quickly piled on with a second goal to make it 2-0.
The could have been worse for the Jacks had it not been for some timely saves by Phipps who would end the night with 35 saves.
The Jacks got some late life in the second thanks to Zach Heintz who took a rebound off a Carl Skarstrom shot and buried it top-shelf on Mudbugs goaltender Leo Chuard. Heintz's fourth goal of the season made it a 2-1 game going into the 3rd.
The Jacks came out with a hot hand to start the final period. Rex Moe scored 39 seconds into the period off a brilliant feed from Skarstrom to tie the game 2-2.
Then about eight minutes later Jared Christy picked the pocket of a Shreveport defender and rushed in on a break away. Instead of dekeing, Christy took a quick shot that beat Chuard over his glove to give Odessa their first lead of the hockey game.
That lead would last about three minutes as the Mudbugs capitalized on two broken plays in front to go from being down 3-2 to then being up 4-3.
Both Mudbug goals came 27 seconds apart.
The Jacks had a chance to tie things up late with the goaltender pulled but were unable to capitalize.
The Jackalopes will have a chance at pay-back against the Mudbugs on Saturday night as they hope to salvage a series split.
Face-off is set for 7:11 pm.
