
Jacks Acquire Silvestre, Royal

Glens Falls, NY- The Adirondack Lumberjacks and the Lincoln Saltdogs have agreed to a deal that sends power-hitting OF Juan Silvestre and rookie LHP Shannon Royal to the Lumberjacks in exchange for RHP Mike Zipser the Northern League clubs announced today.
Silvestre, a 5'11 180 pound outfielder, was signed by the Seattle Mariners as a non-drafted free agent in 1994. A native of Hato, DR, Juan's best season came in 2000, when he hit .304 with 30 home runs and 137 RBI's as a member of the Lancaster (CA) JetHawks of the California League. Silvestre was named California League Player of the Year that season. After joining the Saltdogs this season, Silvestre had hit .222 with three home runs and seven RBI's, while striking out just 22 times in 108 at bats.
The Boston Red Sox signed Royal as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2001. The 23 year-old South Florida graduate played one season with the Red Sox Gulf Coast League Team, going 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA while collecting a pair of saves. Royal is a native of Fort Myers, FL, and is expected to see time in the starting rotation.
Zipser, who joined the Lumberjacks prior to last season, had compiled a 3-7 record with a respectable 3.82 ERA while playing out his option for the Jacks this year.
In a separate move, the Lumberjacks activated INF Eppie Guerrero from the disabled list. Guerrero had spent the past seven days inactive due to a hamstring injury. In his first game back, Eppie went 1-4 with three RBI's and a run scored in the Jacks 7-5 victory over the Allentown Ambassadors on Monday Night.
