Adirondack Lumberjacks News Release

Durham, NC- The Northern League and East Conference manager George Tsamis announced the 2002 Northern League East All Star selections today. Representing the Lumberjacks will be designated hitter Lorenzo de la Cruz and LHP Chad Ward. The All Star game will be played on August 6 at la Stade in Quebec City, PQ.

League managers and media representatives voted De la Cruz onto the team. Each of the eight teams was allowed one vote by the manager and one vote by a media representative. Lorenzo has hit .347 this year, good for third in the league, while bashing five homers and driving in 38 runs. The Lumberjacks picked de la Cruz up from the Allentown Ambassadors earlier this season.

Ward, along with the squad's other pitchers, was hand picked by East manager George Tsamis. Tsamis earned the right to manage the All Star Team by winning the Northern League East Conference Championship with the New Jersey Jackals last season. Ward is 6-4 on the season, with a league best 1.64 ERA. The lefty has struck out 61 in 76.2 innings pitched while walking just 10 batters all year. Opponents are hitting a paltry .188 off the Fort Ann, NY native.

"Both players are having all-star seasons. I would have been shocked if they weren't named. They consistently have been our two best players and it is a deserving honor," stated Jacks General Manager Curt Jacey.

Ward and de la Cruz will travel to Quebec City, home of les Capitales de Quebec, on August 5 to participate in the game, scheduled for August 6. The Jacks head to Quebec immediately after the All Star game to begin a four game series against the Caps.
