Joliet JackHammers News Release
Two rain delays couldn't hold down the Joliet offense on Monday night as the JackHammers thumped the Goldeyes 7-0 at Canwest Park in Winnipeg. Jonathan Wyatt knocked in a season high four runs on two hits.
The JackHammers (2-2) took the lead in the top of the fourth on a Brad Correll double to the right centerfield gap, scoring Kevin Rios from first base. Rios reached on a throwing error by the shortstop Wes Long, giving Joliet an unearned run against Antony Bello (0-1). The double by Correll was the first hit against Bello and his fourth run batted in this season.
Joliet added two more in the fifth after an hour and 38 minute rain delay, jumping on rookie Austin Donmoyer. Wyatt singled home his first two runs of the night on a single to right.
The JackHammers continued the offensive display with four tallies in the sixth, sending ten hitters to the plate. Donmoyer walked three and hit one in the inning, allowing six earned runs total in his outing. Ryan Basham and Roberto Mena each collected RBI singles while Wyatt smacked an 0-2 pitch up the middle with the bases loaded to knock in two more.
The Goldeyes (3-2) threatened early but never got to Todd Privett, who held Winnipeg scoreless in four innings of work. The rain delay knocked Privett out of the game, setting the stage for Michael Rocco (1-0) to earn the victory.
Rocco retired all six hitters he faced, striking out one in the process.
The JackHammers and Goldeyes will meet in game two of their four game set tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Rory Shortell (0-0) will make his first start of the season opposite Matt Kniginysky (0-0). The pre-game show comes your way at 6:50 p.m. on 1340 WJOL.
