Big Fifth Inning Dooms JackHammers in 8-4 Loss

WINNIPEG, MB, CANADA - A six run fifth inning did in the JackHammers Tuesday night as Joliet fell 8-4 to Winnipeg in front of 5,056 at Canwest Park. The JackHammers are now 2-3 on their seven game road trip with two games left in Winnipeg.

The Goldeyes (4-2) sent 11 hitters to the plate in the fifth, plating six runs on four hits. Juan Diaz and Kevin West both reached against Rory Shortell (0-1), forcing the starter out of the game. Sean Teague came on and allowed a two run double to Dee Brown, giving Winnipeg a 4-3 lead. Vince Harrison then launched his first home run of the season, a two run shot over the left field fence. Josh Asanovich ended the scoring with a two run single off Brian Gartley, who took over for Teague.

The JackHammers (2-3) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a bases loaded single by Kevin Rios, scoring two. Jon Nelson and Justin Justice singled and Rafael Mendez reached a sacrifice bunt and miscue by the starter, Matt Kniginyzky (1-0), setting the stage for Rios.

Kniginyzky went five to earn the victory, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts while Zach Baldwin earned his first save. The southpaw tossed the final four frames, surrendering only one run on three hits.

Joliet added a late run off Baldwin in the seventh on an RBI double by Justice, his second hit of the game.

Shortell picks up the loss, working 4.1 frames allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out two, walked two and hit two batters.

Jonathan Wyatt again led the offensive with three hits and three stolen bases. Nelson and Justice each contributed two hits with Rios driving in a pair.

The series continues tomorrow night in downtown Winnipeg. Bear Bay (0-1) will make his second start of the season and first against his former club. Mark Holliman (1-0) takes the bump for Winnipeg. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. with a 6:50 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
