Joliet JackHammers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - William Jackel stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth as the Joliet JackHammers (38-39) held on for a 10-9 victory in the completion of the suspended game from last night against the Schaumburg Flyers (31-47). Joliet dropped game two 5-0 behind seven shutout innings from Dustin Glant.
The JackHammers began the game today with a 9-0 lead in the fourth after touching up Brett Harker (6-8) last night before rain postponed the game to today. The Flyers would rally with nine runs, leaving the bases loaded in the ninth. Jackel came on in the ninth looking for his first save and retired Travis Brown to start the frame. Kit Pellow was hit by an 0-2 pitch and moved to second on a passed ball by Joe Billick. Mario Delgado followed with a single to plate Pellow and pull the Flyers to within a run at 10-9. Joey Gomes singled and Ron Bourquin grounded out to first to put runners at second and third with two outs. Jackel intentionally walked the pinch hitter, Richard Mercado, to load the bases. Tommy Fitzgerald popped out to left field for the third and final out.
Griffin Bailey (3-4) earned the victory, stabilizing the bullpen with 2.1 scoreless innings. Bailey allowed only one hit and struck out one in the outing.
Brad Correll provided the lone JackHammer run once play resumed, hitting a solo home run in the fifth to put the âHammers up 10-1.
The Flyers scored eight runs over the middle frames against Michael Rocco and Billy Petrick to cut into the lead. Schaumburg scored three times in the fifth and added four more in the sixth.
Josh Flores collected five hits with Freddie Thon picking up four of his own. Chris Colton knocked in a game high three runs as the JackHammers snapped a four game losing streak.
The nightcap featured a complete game shutout from Glant (8-4), his second this season against Joliet, and a 5-0 victory for Schaumburg. The All-Star scattered four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Glant has worked 16 innings this season without allowing a run to Joliet.
The Flyers got on the board in the third, scoring twice against Rory Shortell (2-7). Travis Brown singled with one out and scored on a Ruddy Yan triple. Kit Pellow followed with a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 lead.
Shortell surrendered two more in the sixth on a Richard Mercado two run single after Joey Gomes led off with a single and Ron Bourquin doubled.
The JackHammer starter went the distance as well, allowing five runs (four earned) in six frames on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Freddie Thon, Ryan Wehrle, Kevin Rios and Rafael Mendez each had a single against Glant, the only hits allowed by the right-hander.
The JackHammers dropped back below .500 and will look for the series victory tomorrow in the rubber game. Aaron Guinn (0-1) will go for Schaumburg while the JackHammers starter is to be announced. First pitch is slated for 1:20 p.m. with a 1:10 p.m. pre-game show on the JackHammers Radio Network.
