JackHammers Split Doubleheader in Lake County

August 17, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Joliet JackHammers News Release

Devin Anderson tossed his first complete game and Jon Nelson drove in four runs to lead the Joliet JackHammers (40-40) over the Lake County Fielders (34-47) 7-2 in game one of a doubleheader Monday night in Zion. The Fielders captured game two 4-1 behind a three run homer from Brian McFall and a Garry Bakker complete game.

The JackHammers broke a scoreless game with two long balls in the fourth inning against Ryan Falcon (3-3). Jonathan Wyatt led off with a solo home run and Jon Nelson slugged a two run shot after a Brad Correll double for a 3-0 lead.

Anderson did the rest, tossing his first complete game. The lefty surrendered two runs on five hits over the seven frames with one strikeout.

Joliet widened the lead late, adding two runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Nelson added an RBI double in the sixth and knocked in another run on a single in the seventh. Ryan Wehrle and Freddie Thon knocked in the other two runs to put the 'Hammers up 7-1.

Brian McFall launched a solo home run in the fourth against Anderson and scored the final Lake County run in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Falcon, making his first start of the season, allowed three runs on four hits in four innings of work.

Correll was 3-3 with three runs scored while Nelson went 3-4 with a home run, double and four runs batted in.

The nightcap featured another complete game, but for Lake County's Garry Bakker (5-7). The right-hander surrendered one run and walked three, but struck out a season high 11 hitters while throwing 125 pitches.

Thon gave the JackHammers a 1-0 lead in the fourth, touching up Bakker for a solo home run to right field.

The lead was short-lived as the Fielders tied the game in the bottom of the inning against Kyle Dahman. McFall doubled and scored on a Cody Strait single. Lake County would eventually load the bases, but Michael Rocco (2-2) came on and picked up the final out.

Rocco stayed on for the fifth and walked Guillermo Martinez with one out and struck out Juan Valdes for the second out. Martinez stole second on the strikeout pitch, leaving first base open. The JackHammers intentionally walked Josh Short and McFall followed with a three run home run for the 4-1 lead.

Rocco took the loss, allowing the three runs on two hits with four strikeouts over 2.1 frames. Brian Gartley got the spot start and didn't allow a run over three innings.

The JackHammers and Fielders will continue their four game series in three days tomorrow night. Todd Privett (7-4) and Ryan Bicondoa (2-7) is the starting pitching matchup. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. with a 6:50 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
