WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-Four Joliet pitchers combined to hold the Goldeyes to just six hits, as the Joliet JackHammers (26-46) earned a 2-0 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (44-26) before 5,906 fans at Canwest Park on Wednesday night.
The JackHammers took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning against Winnipeg RHP Mark Michael (2-3). RF Joe Gaetti (1-4) hit a one-out single and stole second base. He moved to third base on a throwing error by Goldeyes C Jeff DeSmidt.
DH Kyle Nichols (1-3) hit a two-out double to score Gaetti for a 1-0 Joliet lead.
LHP Devin Anderson (1-3) took the hill for Joliet in a "spot-start" and was outstanding.
He gave the JackHammers five innings and allowed no runs on two hits. He walked four and struck out five men in his first start since May 26 in Kansas City. The performance earned Anderson his first win of the season.
Joliet added another run in the 5th inning. CF Adam Klein (0-3) worked a walk and stole second base. A groundout by 3B Vince Harrison (1-5) moved Klein to third base. LF Brad Correll (1-3) laced an RBI single to center field to score Klein for a 2-0 Joliet lead.
RHP Luke O'Loughlin pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Anderson. RHP Chad Blackwell worked a scoreless 8TH inning and RHP Drew Shetrone struck out the side in the 9th inning to nail down his 4th save.
Loose Gravel: The JackHammers improve to 5-3 in shutouts this season. The last shutout came on July 15 when Fargo-Moorhead shutout Joliet 4-0 at Silver Cross Field.
The JackHammers and Goldeyes finish their three-game series on Thursday night. RHP Derek Barrows (2-2, 6.25) gets the start for the JackHammers against RHP Bear Bay (6-3, 3.51) for the Goldeyes. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
