Schaumburg Flyers News Release

GARY, IN - Ed Almonte was spectacular for the Flyers, allowing just one earned run on two hits over 6.0, but the Flyers bats were silenced once again in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the RailCats Wednesday at the U.S. Steel Yard.

Gary got on the board in the second thanks to a Flyers mistake. Mike Rohde singled with one out and stole second. With two outs, Tony Mansolino committed a throwing error after fielding a sharp grounder, and Rohde came home to give the RailCats a 1-0 lead.

The Flyers would tie things up in the fifth as Almonte continued to hold the RailCats at bay. Felix Jose led off with a walk. After Jeff Dunbar reached on a fielder's choice, Richard Mercado singled and advanced him to third. Lyndon Poole the scored Dunbar on a fielder's choice groundout of his own to tie things up at 1-1.

Schaumburg let a golden opportunity slip the following inning. Antoan Richardson tripled for his first hit as a Flyer to start the frame, but Gary shortstop Jay Pecci came up huge defensively twice to keep Richardson put. Travis Brown bounced one up the middle that Pecci dived for and gloved, then threw to first from his backside to retire Brown. Ferrante then stepped up and smoked a one-hopper to Pecci. Pecci, who was drawn in on the grass, stabbed it with a backhand and threw out Ferrante, holding Richardson at first. After a Jose walk, Dunbar lined out to left to end the inning.

Gary would take the lead for good in the seventh. Rohde led off with a triple and scored on a two-out Rob Marconi double off Josh Giles to make it 2-1. Giles would walk Pecci to bring home the third RailCat run.

A perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Anthony Esquer brought home the fourth and final run in the eighth.

Each team only managed four hits, with Gary's Mike Rohde recording the only multi-hit game, going 2-4 with three runs scored.

Almonte (4-9) takes the tough loss, while Gary reliever Kyle Heyne (2-0) picks up the win with a scoreless seventh. RailCats' starter Garret Holleran took a no-decision, allowing one run on three hits in six innings of work.

LHP Carmen Pignatiello (6-7, 5.88) throws in the series finale tomorrow for the Flyers, while LHP Tony Cogan (6-6, 3.79) counters for the RailCats. The first pitch will be thrown at 7:00.
