Rockford RiverHawks News Release
JOLIET, Ill. - The Joliet JackHammers rallied for four two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 9-5, Tuesday at Silver Cross Field.
Freddie Thon was 2-for-5 with four RBI for the JackHammers and capped the sixth-inning rally with a two-run single. Rockford's Adam Shorsher and Joliet's Jon Nelson each hit solo home runs.
Joliet broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth. Rockford starter Kyle Ruwe (0-2) retired the inning's first two batters, but walked Jorge Rodriguez and gave up a single to Jon Wyatt. Wyatt, the Joliet leadoff hitter, was 4-for-4 against Ruwe on Tuesday. Brandon Todd came out of the bullpen, but hit Kevin Rios to load the bases, then walked Brad Correll to force home the go-ahead run. Wyatt scored on a passed ball by Shorsher and Thon followed with a gapper to right-center field.
Rockford rallied from an early three-run deficit and scored four times in a fifth inning that featured a RBI single by Patrick O'Sullivan and a two-run double from Randall Simon that gave the RiverHawks a 5-4 lead. Nelson tied the game with a homer to left in the bottom of the fifth.
Brian Gartley (1-0) won in relief. Joliet closer Drew Shetrone entered with runners at the corners and two outs in the ninth and retired Shorsher on a forceout to earn his third save. The RiverHawks left 11 men on base, eight of them in scoring position.
Rich Austin was 1-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games for the RiverHawks, who have lost a season-high three in a row.
The series continues at 11:10 a.m. Wednesday. The RiverHawks are home at 7:05 p.m. Friday for a game against Fargo-Moorhead. The Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest, a traveling baseball carnival, is open 4-7 p.m. in the Road Ranger Stadium parking lot and is free with paid admission to the game.
