Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Schaumburg, IL - The Pilots (4-8) hadn't hit a home run since Opening Night, almost two weeks ago. That is, until Tuesday. Schaumburg launched two shots over the wall, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Redhawks (7-5) at Alexian Field.

The scoring began for the Pilots when Richard Mercado hit a two run round-tripper over the left field wall to take a 2-0 lead, the first homer for the Pilots in 11 games.

The Redhawks then put five unanswered runs on the board, all charged to Schaumburg starter Cody Evans. The righty went 5.2 innings, giving up five hits with no strikeouts and a walk. Brian McCullough shut down Fargo-Moorhead in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless frames to keep the Pilots within striking distance.

Schaumburg went into the bottom of the eighth down 5-2, a bad sign if history proved true. The Pilots hadn't won a game yet this season when trailing after seven innings. Andre Marshall led off with a single into right field, followed up by a Joe Nowicki double that just snuck over the third base bag. Two batters later, Richard Mercado continued his hot night with a two run single up the middle to plate Marshall and Nowicki.

Redhawks manager Doug Simunic opted to bring in lefty Adam Tollefson, who struck out pinch hitter Dylan Parzyk for the second out of the inning. But Simunic then went back to the ‘pen, calling on T.J. Stanton. The righty allowed a single to Mike Mooney, but tossed a wild pitch to Tom Fitzgerald that allowed the tying run to score from third. Stanton got out of the jam, getting pinch hitter Brandon Newton to strike out looking.

Closer Matt Elliott came on in the ninth and preserved the tie. Then two batters into the bottom half of the inning, Andre Marshall smacked one over the right field wall for the walk off solo home run. It was the center fielder's first round tripper in Schaumburg.

The Pilots and Redhawks play the rubber match at 6:30 PM Wednesday night before hitting the road for seven games. It's the last chance to catch Schaumburg at Alexian Field for a while, so come out to the ballpark to cheer on the Pilots.
