Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET, IL – The Gary SouthShore RailCats (10-8, 27-36) defeated the Joliet JackHammers (12-8, 34-31) 3-to-2 in 13 innings on Friday night at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers are 5-and-3 through eight games of this 10-game home stand. They are also 3-and-5 versus the RailCats on the season series. The RailCats were the home team. The JackHammers first place lead was cut to a game.

With one out in the top of the 3rd inning, Brian Sprout (2-for-5) doubled to the right field corner. Two batters later and with two outs, Derek Kopacz (1-for-3) hit a low liner that was knocked down by second baseman Francisco Matos near second base. Kopacz was credited with a single and RBI as Sprout scored from second base. The score was 1-to-0 JackHammers.

The JackHammers added another two-out run in the top of the 4th inning. Chad Henry's (3-for-5) RBI single to left field scored Rob Fischer (1-for-6) who doubled just before Henry's at-bat. The double was Fischer's 9th and the RBI was Henry's 13th.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, Jason Clark (2-for-6) led off the inning with a single and Kevin Wittmeyer (0-for-5) walked. After a passed ball, Bobby Hill (2-for-6) flied out to left field. Bill Malone's (1-for-7) ground out scored Jason Clark (2-for-6). The next batter, John Anderson (3-for-6), hit a grounder that pulled Pete DeYoung off of first base. DeYoung's throw to LHP Brent Franklin reached first base as Anderson slid into the base head first for an infield RBI single and a 2-to-2 game.

With two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning, Andersen delivered a RBI single to right field that scored Hill from second base. RHP Greg Watson (2-1) endured the loss. He pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up that final run. LHP Chris Demouy (4-1) earned the win with an inning of relief.

LOOSE GRAVEL: RailCats designated hitter Jermaine Swinton (0-for-6) established a Northern League Central record for most strikeouts in a game with six (twice looking and four times swinging—if you wondered). The player who held the record was Kopacz on August 4, 1998 when he was with Sioux City when he struck out five times.

The JackHammers and RailCats will meet for the third game of this four-game series on Saturday evening at 6:05 PM. The JackHammers will be the home team. RHP Rickey Lewis, Jr. (3-5, 4.11) will start for the JackHammers, and RHP Josh Bradford (2-3, 5.09) will start for the RailCats. Myron Noodleman will entertain in between innings courtesy of Pepsi. For tickets, please call 815-726-BALL(2255) or stop at the Silver Cross Field ticket office (opens at 9 AM).
