Sioux City X's Out Flyers by 2-1 Margin
August 2, 2002 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers had enjoyed a stretch of 47 runs scored in their last four games, but the run-scoring tendencies slowed with a 2-1 loss to the Sioux City Explorers on Friday at Alexian Field. Schaumburg's record dropped to 7-12, 26-36. The Flyers sit 4.5 games out of first place in the Northern League-Central's South Division behind Joliet, pending the other Northern League results. The Explorers raised their mark to 5-14, 33-30 on the season.
Sioux City did their damage first, with C Todd Santore's RBI single off of Flyers starter Matt Wagner (2-4) in the second inning. Santore would come through again in the fourth inning, when he collected his second RBI single and stretched the deficit to 2-0. Schaumburg would come back in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Sioux City RHP Chris Swiatkiewicz (1-2) uncorked a wild pitch. The miscue brought 3B Jeremy Smith home from third base after the Flyers infielder had reached on a fielding error. That would mark the only run of the game for the Flyers, who almost tied the game in the ninth when LF Steve Foley (2-for-4) looped a one-out triple to rightfield. However, Sioux City righty Jimmy Hooper (Save # 7) closed the door on the Flyer hopes when he got C Chris Finnegan to ground out to second, and 2B Chris Dunn swinging on a strikeout to end the game.
The evening featured a tight pitching duel on both sides. Wagner struck out nine batters in seven innings, and allowed two earned runs on five hits. The nine punchouts were a high for a Flyers pitcher in '02. LHP Mike Chaney and RHP Gabe DeHoyos came on in relief and fanned four more batters. The total of thirteen strikeouts thrown by Schaumburg was also a season high. Swiatkiewicz went six innings, struck out eight Flyers, and allowed no earned runs in his Sioux City debut.
The Flyers went to 3-2 under Interim Manager Jim Boynewicz. Schaumburg continues their four-game set against the Explorers on Saturday. The Flyers are undecided on a starter, while Sioux City will toss RHP Adam Springston (2-1, 3.00 ERA) (6:20 PM/Radio: WONC 89.1 FM).
