Duluth-Superior Dukes News Release
(Duluth, MN) Duluth-Superior Dukes field manager, Al Gallagher, announced today the signing of catcher, David Ullery and RHP Tom Masterman. Ullery was recently released by the Baltimore Orioles' Bowie Bay Sox (AA) of the Eastern League.
Ullery, 27, had his contract purchased by the Kansas City Royals in 1997 from the Anderson Lawmen of the independent Heartland Baseball League. He hit .229 with 37 doubles and 12 HR in the Royals' organization, before being traded to the Orioles' organization in 2001.
"Dave's a AA catcher who we hope will solidify our offense," said Gallagher. "He's an outstanding defenseman who has shown that he can hit."
Ullery, an Indiana native, has committed only 10 errors as a catcher in his 6 years (261 games) of professional experience. He was hitting .189 with 5 doubles in 38 games for the Bay Sox this season.
Masterman, 31, was in camp with the Dukes this spring. The St. Paul native played in the Northern League in 1995 with the Winnipeg Goldeyes. He was 1-1 with 2 saves in 24 IP in 19 games. Masterman is one of the oldest rookies in Northern League history.
"Tom's an older rookie who we are giving a second chance," said Gallagher. "The time is right for him and it's up to Tom to show us what he can do."
Both players will be in uniform for tonight's game against the Lincoln Saltdogs at Wade Stadium. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
