Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers used a lucky seventh inning after they found themselves down by four runs, and beat the Sioux City Explorers by a final of 10-6 on Thursday. Schaumburg's record elevated to 7-11, 26-35 after the victory at Alexian Field. A win by first-place Joliet held the Flyers at 4.5 games out of first place in the Northern League-Central's South Division. Sioux City dropped to 4-14, 32-30 on the season.
RBI singles by LF Bernard Caston and CF Mike Byas put Sioux City ahead 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Flyers charged back in the seventh inning when CF Jason Herrick's (3-for-4, 3 RBI) solo home run to left centerfield cut the deficit to 5-2. 2B Chris Dunn (2-for-4, One Run Scored) followed shortly with an RBI single. The Flyers took their first lead of the game when DH Mark Burke hit a 2-1 pitch from Sioux City reliever Manny Bermudez (5-3) over the left centerfield fence. The three-run homer gave Schaumburg a 6-5 lead, and marked the first time this year that the Flyers hit multiple home runs in the same inning. Herrick came up again as the Flyers batted around, and knocked a two-run single which raised the lead to three. The seven-run seventh gave Schaumburg an 8-6 advantage.
With the bases loaded, none out, and one run already in during the eighth inning, RHP Evan Fahrner came in for the Flyers. The hard throwing relief specialist fanned 3B Cris Colon and DH Tony Mitchell, and goaded 2B Curt Lee to pop out to third, preserving the Flyer lead. He then shut down Sioux City 1-2-3 in the ninth inning for his third save. That set the stage for RF Rodney Clifton's (2-for-5) double, which brought two insurance runs home in the bottom of the eighth. RHP Tommy John III received his first win since May 27 (2-2), and LF Steve Foley went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Flyers moved to 3-1 under Interim Manager Jim Boynewicz. Schaumburg continues their four-game set against the Explorers on Friday. RHP Matt Wagner (2-3, 7.16 ERA) starts for Schaumburg (7:20 PM/Radio: WONC 89.1 FM).
