Joliet JackHammers News Release
Fargo, ND-The Joliet JackHammers opened up a three game series at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, North Dakota on Tuesday. It was a match up of two teams jockeying for position atop their respective standings with Fargo leading the North Division by three games and Joliet trailing Kansas City by just a single game in the South Division. This will be the only time these two teams meet all season as the RedHawks will not visit Silver Cross Field in 2005.
Joliet was en fuego at the plate, as they pounded out a season high 21 hits in a 12-2 beating of the Fargo-MoorHead RedHawks. Leading the charge was SS John Lackaff who was 4-5 with three singles and a double. He scored twice and also drove home a run. Two other âHammers had three hits, including Jermaine Allensworth and Jayson Drobiak, each of whom had a chance for the cycle with Allensworth not getting the home run and Drobiak not getting the triple. Every starter for Joliet had at least one hit on the 21 hit evening.
Jason Shelley got the start for the âHammers, his seventh start of the season.
Jason is now 2-2 on the road and 3-1 in the month of June after a great day on the hill. He was magnificent going eight strong innings, scattering just four hits and allowing one run. He did match a season high with four walks, but also struck out five. Jason (4-2) allowed just one extra base hit on the evening, and was only threatened in two innings, setting the side down in
Opposing Shelley on the hill was right-hander Todd George. George (0-3) had the weakest stats of the RedHawks starters, coming in with an 0-2 record and an ERA of 5.27. George would not last long, going just three innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits.
The JackHammers came out of the gates strong, scoring three times in the opening inning with an RBI double from Jason Drobiak and an RBI single from Jim Kavourias doing the damage. Joliet has now out-scored opponents 31-6 in the first inning. An un-earned run in the 2nd inning made it 4-0.
Joliet would continue to bludgeon RedHawks starter Todd George with another three run inning, this time in the 3rd to make it 7-0. That was enough to knock out George, but Joliet continued to swing a hot bat against the bullpen as well. Jayson Drobiak homered on a 1-2 pitch from reliever Josh Dietz to make it 8-0 and the route was on! The homer for Drobiak was his team leading 9th of the season. The âHammers would tack on another four runs for the final tally of twelve while Fargo got a run in the 5th and one in the 9th to make the 12-2 final.
The RedHawks, desperate to not use any more pitching then necessary in the blow out resorted to back up catcher Derek Dormanen, who worked two innings in relief, allowing a run on four hits.
This was the first time Fargo-Moorhead had been home to face a South division team and overall just their tenth game of the season played at Newman Outdoor Field. Joliet meanwhile has already played eighteen games at home.
These two teams will meet again Wednesday night as left-hander Damien Myers (0-2) 7.17 ERA gets the start for Joliet while Taft Cable (3-0) 2.05 ERA gets the nod for the Hawks.
Loose gravel: The JackHammers were without the services of All-Star catcher Jeff Goldbach, who has been on the team's bereavement list since June 16, as he attends to family matters regarding a death in the family. Jeff is expected to be in the lineup on Wednesday.
Joliet is now 9-3 in their orange jerseys and 7-6 on the road. When scoring first, the âHammers are now 14-2, and are outscoring their opponents 31-6 in the first inning. Joliet is 6-5 vs the North Division and are 2-1 after off/travel days. The JackHammers now lead the all time series 15-11.
Jermaine Allensworth has now reached base safely in 28 straight games, while Gabby Delgado's hitting streak grew to it's longest mark of the season, 8 games.
The crowd of 4,526 were entertained in between innings by the Clown Prince of Baseball, Myron Noodleman.
