Joliet JackHammers News Release


JOLIET, IL – The Joliet JackHammers announced the signing of pitchers Brian Bulger, Mike Mueller and Joaquin Canizal as they continue to build their roster for their fourth season. Also signing as a result of an open tryout were infielders Ahren Baranski and Jamie Spottz. The JackHammers are scheduled to begin the 2005 season at 7:05 pm on Friday, May 20 versus the Gary SouthShore (IN) RailCats at Silver Cross Field in Joliet's City Center.

Bulger joins the team after pitching in the Devil Rays farm system for the past 3 seasons. In 3 years, he's compiled a 21-21 record to go along with a 4.57 ERA. In 2003, while pitching for Charleston-South Carolina of the South Atlantic League (A), he started all 25 of his appearances and finished with 11 wins and 9 losses. 2004 saw Brian pitch for Charleston-South Carolina again, but this time appearing in 37 games with 17 of those coming as starts. In '04 he was 10-8 with a 3.58 ER and limited opposing hitters to a .228 batting average.

Mueller is a 6'5, 230 pound pitcher who spent the last two seasons in the Braves organization. He made 20 appearances with Myrtle Beach (A) of the Carolina League where he was 0-2 with a 5.57 ERA. He later appeared in 15 games for Rome (A) of the South Atlantic League where he was 0-3 with a 5.64 ERA. He attended college at Auburn where he was 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 17 appearances on the mound and 22 starts in the field his senior season (2002).

Canizal is a 6'4, 200 pound pitcher making his first stop in independent baseball. His last 2 seasons have been spent with the Blue Jays organization as 2004 saw him play for Charleston-West Virginia of the South Atlantic League. He compiled a 9-2 record with a 4.16 ERA, pitching 80 innings in 42 appearances.

The JackHammers took advantage of an open try our on Sunday, May 1st as they welcomed newcomers Ahren Baranski and Jamie Spottz to their spring training roster. Baranski played collegiately in 2004 with the Lewis Flyers of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. In 55 games, he batted .280 (49-175) while leading the team in doubles with 16. Spottz meanwhile last played professionally in 1999 with London, Ontario of the Frontier League. He played collegiately at Ball State University in Muncie, IN where he split duties as both a pitcher and a fielder.
