New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The Jackals took care of business early and often against the Quebec Capitales with a resounding 11-3 victory in the opener of a five-game home stand at Yogi Berra Stadium, as the Jackals pounded Quebec starter Sheldon McDonlad for eight runs on 13 hits.

New Jersey wasted little time in putting this game away. In the bottom of the first inning, the Jackals sent 11 men to the plate in a five-run opening inning. Peter Mooney, Anthony Gomez, A.J. Kirby-Jones, and Mark Threlked opened the frame with singles. The singles by Kirby-Jones and Threlkeld pushed the Jackals to a 2-0 lead.

In fact on the Threlkeld base hit, the Jackals' first baseman tried to extend a single into a double, and got caught in a rundown between second and third; this allowed Kirby-Jones to come in and score from third, giving the Jackals a 3-0 advantage.

Later in the inning after an error at short allowed the newest Jackal, D'Vontrey Richardson to reach first base, and a single by Helms, Jared Schlehuber and Tony Caldwell had back-to-back RBI singles to push the Jackals lead to 5-0.

The five run first inning was the best first inning by New Jersey all season.

New Jersey added to that lead when Schlehuber drove in two more runs with a double down the right field line, making it 7-1 New Jersey.

Anthony Claggett, making his second start against Quebec in a week was solid. The veteran right-hander allowed only three runs on six hits over six innings of work. He improves to 5-4 on the season.

As for McDonald he struggled. The Quebec left-hander was removed after five innings, allowing eight runs on 13 hits.

The Jackals would tack on three more runs in the eighth inning to take an 11-3 lead. RBI base hits by Gomez, Threlkeld and Castro led the way for New Jersey in the eighth.

NOTES: Friday night's game was the first game played by Anthony Gomez in almost two weeks. The second baseman missed time due to a back injury. He went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in his return.

D'Vontrey Richrardson was 1-for-5 with two runs scored, and played right field in his Jackals debut.

The Jackals and Capitales play the second game of this three game series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m.
