Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals announced today the signing of forwards Mark Mullen and Shaun Aebig for the 2005-2006 season.
Mullen, a native of Dorchester, Massachusetts, the third player signed this season who played for the Pee Dee Pride in 2004-05. Last year, his rookie season, Mullen was selected to the ECHL All-Star Game, one of Pee Dee's two representatives. During the ECHL's Skills Competition, Mullen blew away the other All-Stars by winning the Fastest Skater event. In 51 games for the Pride last season, the 24-year old scored 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists), but since he is below the UHL definition of a Rookie (60 games played) his status counts towards the Rookie requirement. Mullen played four years of college hockey at Boston University, a perennial powerhouse in Hockey East.
"Mark is an excellent young player and yet another top notch person to join the fold," said Jackals Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Perry Florio. "A true winger, Mark is capable of and will play all three forward positions this season. He is a very effective fore-checker and a tremendous penalty killer too because of his great speed and instincts. His unselfishness, coachability, and his overall professional demeanor will make him a very valuable asset to our club."
Aebig was the top scorer for the Winston-Salem Polar Twins of the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2004-05. In 56 games played the Rosthern, Saskatchewan native scored 61 points (27 goals, 34 assists) last season. He is the second player from Saskatchewan to sign for the upcoming season.
"Shaun Aebig is a player that I am excited to see when camp begins next month," said Coach Florio. "He has a nice scoring touch and he plays with an edge. I love a guy that is willing to take a few licks to get the job done and he is not afraid to dish a few out either. To be a champion you always need a few guys to overachieve and I fully expect Shaun to be one of those guys. He is ready to get to Elmira and we are certainly happy to have him."
At 23-years old, Aebig is just four games under the UHL's rookie rule limit, making him the 4th rookie signed by Coach Florio this season; Three of those four rookies are second year players, which means they add very valuable experience for the Jackals to use towards the UHL's minimum of four rookies dressed in each night's lineup.
The Jackals will start the 2005-06 UHL regular season Friday October 21st in Illinois against the Rockford Ice Hogs. Elmira will hit the ice at the First Arena for the home opener on Saturday October 29th at 7:05 pm against the Roanoke Valley Vipers.
