New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Isaac Pavlik turned in a quality start and Romas Hicks was flawless out of the New Jersey Jackals bullpen, but a two-run home run by catcher Pete LaForest carried the Quebec Capitales to a 2-0 victory and a first-round playoff series sweep on Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Leading the best-of-five series 2-0 entering the contest, Quebec plated the game's only two runs in the top of the second inning when third baseman Mike Thompson led off with a single before LaForest lined a two-run homer to right center.

Pavlik retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced including a string of 10 straight at one point, but Capitales starter Karl Gelinas stifled New Jersey the rest of the way. Gelinas earned the win after scattering eight hits in seven shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Quebec's Matthew Rusch pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Gelinas to notch his second save of the series.

For New Jersey, Hicks entered with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth and proceeded to retired all four batters he faced, striking out three.

Eight of New Jersey's nine starters collected hits in the contest, with Adam Godwin, Carlos Sosa, and Abraham Nunez each doubling while Jabe Bergeron went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Quebec will now face the Pittsfield Colonials in the best-of-five Can-Am League Championship Series beginning on Tuesday. Pittsfield defeated the Brockton Rox in four games in the other first-round playoff series.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. Visit the Jackals online at www.jackals.com.
