New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - The New Jersey Jackals used a five-run inning, a four-run inning and a season-high 18 hits to power their way past the Newark Bears 10-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

In the top of the eighth inning Jeff Gogal entered with a runner on second base and the Jackals holding on to a one-run lead. Gogal struck out Bears leadoff hitter Brandon Watson to avoid any damage and then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to record his second save in as many days.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Jackals erupted for four more runs. After the first two hitters of the inning were retired, New Jersey struck for six consecutive hits. Myron Leslie, Jeremy Slayden and Chris Anderson all doubled, while Mike Jones, Nick Giarraputo and Mike DeJesus all singled. The single for DeJesus marked his fifth single of the game on a day in which he went 5-for-5.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning Chris Anderson scored on a throwing error by Newark shortstop Jeff Toth. After an RBI triple by Argenis Reyes and an RBI single by Leonard Davis, Myron Leslie followed with a two-run home run to cap the five run inning.

James Leverton (1-1) earned the win for the Jackals as he pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing three hits, two runs (one earned), and striking out two. Jesse Estrada (0-1) took the loss for the Bears as he went 3 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs (five earned), and striking out five.

The New Jersey bullpen worked out of their share of jams, as Phil Bartleski threw two pitches and recorded two outs to get out of a bases-loaded situation in the sixth. In the seventh, Jared Locke allowed just two runs to score as he inherited the bases loaded with no outs.

The Jackals return to action on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Rockland Boulders, as it will be the first-ever meeting between the teams. Chris Vasami (1-1, 1.80 ERA) is the probable for New Jersey and Jon Velasquez (0-1, 27.00 ERA) will get the ball for Rockland. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast, beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
