Elmira Jackals News Release
CINCINNATI, OHIO- Jordan Sims scored his first hat trick and the Cincinnati Cyclones (21-21-4-0) knocked off the Elmira Jackals (9-32-5-0), 5-1, at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati Wednesday night.
The Jackals played a strong first period, but found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 score as the opportunistic Cyclones capitalized on two Jackals giveaways. First, Jordan Sims intercepted an outlet pass that came through the slot. Sims picked it off and fired in a shot for an unassisted goal at 10:36 of the first period to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
The Jackals responded less than two minutes later to tie the game at one. Mark Bennett had the puck at the left circle and he sent a pass to the right circle where Greg Betzold was ready for a one-timer. The Cincinnati-native and former Cyclone hammered it home to tie the game with his ninth goal of the season.
Then, with the Jackals on a power play, the Cyclones scored shorthanded to reclaim a 2-1 lead. The puck squirted through the Jackals blueline and Sims was off the races for a breakaway. He slid a backhand shot through the pads of Jason Kasdorf for his second goal of the night at 14:54.
Cincinnati built the lead to two in the second period. Andrew Yogan weaved his way up the middle, cutting right through the Jackals defense, before snapping a shot near the crease for a 3-1 lead at 11:49 of the second period. That was the only scoring in the period as Cincinnati carried a 3-1 lead into the third period.
The Jackals were searching for a third period comeback, but it was Cincinnati that found the only two goals in third. The Cyclones ran a set play off a left circle faceoff, with Sims winning a faceoff to himself then centering a pass to Dylan Nowakowski, who fired it home for a 4-1 game at 15:26. Later in the third, Sims completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal at 18:37 to make it a 5-1 final.
