Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, announced today that Grady Whittenburg has been named the Vice President of Communications & Director of Broadcasting for the club's inaugural ECHL campaign. Whittenburg will officially join the Jackals' front office on Monday, September 17th.
Whittenburg, 43, comes to the Jackals after serving as Director of Broadcasting with the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League since the 2002-03 season and as Vice President of Sales for the last two years. Prior to his five-year stint in Binghamton, Whittenburg spent thirteen seasons with Cornell University Athletics in various announcing capacities. Most notably, he was the Voice of Big Red Hockey for twelve seasons from 1990 through 2002.
"With the excitement building towards our first season in the ECHL, the addition of Grady to our off-ice presentation is one that I know our fans will be very pleased with," said Jackals' General Manger Robbie Nichols. "To have this level of experience in both the broadcast booth and in the area of corporate sales joining us this close to the start of the season bodes well for the club," added Nichols.
Whittenburg will serve as the play-by-play voice for all Jackals radio broadcasts airing on Magic 92.7 and 97.7 as well as being the lead voice on the club's unprecedented slate of television broadcasts on WETM-18. The first of twelve television broadcasts will commence with the season-opener Friday, October 19th, at 7:30 p.m. against the Wheeling Nailers at First Arena. The complete WETM-18 television schedule will be released at a later date.
"I'm excited for this next chapter in my professional career to begin and the start of the season cannot arrive quickly enough," said Whittenburg. "I've always felt that my call represented the way I used to watch games from the stands, full of passion and emotion. Win or lose, I truly enjoy what I have the privilege of doing for a living and I'm confident the fans will sense that from the first drop of the puck on October 19th."
Along with his on-air duties, Whittenburg will serve as the primary liaison between the club and the local and regional media and devote his off-seasons contributing to the efforts of the Jackals' corporate sales team.
A lifelong resident of New York, Whittenburg resides in Lansing with his wife of 12 years, Vonnie, and their three children (Jenna 22, Stefan 21, and Marc 17).
