New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ New Jersey used a powerful offensive performance and the pinpoint accuracy of starter Joel Bennett to win their 2005 finale at Yogi Berra Stadium 9-1 over the Worcester Tornadoes.

Bennett was masterful in picking up his 11th victory of the season. He went seven innings, allowing only one run on six hits while striking out seven. The lone run came in the first inning on a Zach Strong RBI single. Bennett escaped a bases-loaded, no out jam in the second, and cruised the rest of the way.

The Jackals took the lead for good in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Francisco Lebron and a sacrifice fly from Steve Checksfield.

However, it was the fifth when the home side really opened up, started by a Benji Gil solo homerun. Steve Checksfield tacked on another run with a single, and the next batter, Matt Hagen, unloaded on a Derell McCall fastball for a three-run bomb to left to make it 7-1.

Gil finished the evening 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and brought the crowd to its feet with his first pitching performance of the year. The shortstop threw two innings of one-hit ball, striking out a pair.

Lebron also had a spectacular game, getting hits on four out of five chances. Zach Smithlin was 3-for-5 on the night, and Elvis Corporan finished up a perfect 3-for-3.

For Worcester, Keith Beauregard went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Jackals finish up against Worcester in their last home game of the season tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. For tickets and other information, please call the Jackals Ticket Office at 973-746-7434 or visit www.jackals.com.
