Cutters Playoff Picture to Be Resolved Starting Friday

September 1, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters have occupied the top spot in the Can-Am League South Division standings for most of the season's second half. With just four games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Cutters will have the chance to clinch their first playoff berth at Yale Field this weekend.

The final series Friday-Monday (September 2-5) is a four-game set against the Worcester Tornadoes. Leading the Tornadoes by one and a half games entering play on Thursday, the Cutters magic number is three. The magic number indicates the number of Cutters wins and Tornadoes losses needed to clinch a playoff spot. New Haven County needs only to tie Worcester to be crowned South Division second half champs due to the Tornadoes claiming the first half title.

Worcester was scheduled to play at New Jersey Thursday night. If the Tornadoes win, the Cutters will need to win twice against the Massachusetts team, while a Worcester loss would mean that New Haven County needs only one win in the final series to be declared second half champ.

Friday's 7:05 p.m. game will be followed by the final fireworks display of the season. Courtney Hall (5-4) starts on the mound for the Cutters and will square off against Worcester's Junior Guerrero (5-3).

The schedule for the weekend action:

Friday 7:05 Worcester-Fireworks Show

Saturday 7:05 Worcester

Sunday 2:05 Worcester

Monday 2:05 Worcester-Fan Appreciation Day

During Friday's game, tickets will go on sale for individual playoff games. Ticket prices are $7, $9 or $13, one dollar more than regular season prices and can be purchased through www.CuttersBaseball.com, by calling 203-777-5636 or by visiting the Yale Field box office. Tickets purchased online can be printed at home.

Ticket packages for all Cutters home playoff games are also available.

Friday also marks the beginning of the first annual Firefighters Softball Tournament to Benefit MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association), hosted by the Cutters. During the four-day long tourney, eight teams of firefighters from different Connecticut towns will take to the diamond to determine the state's best team. The fire departments involved have been selling tickets to the Cutters games this weekend, with half of the proceeds going to MDA. All games will be played at Yale Field prior to the Cutters/Tornadoes contests.
