Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, NY - For the second straight night the Elmira Jackals fell one goal short of the Quad City Mallards, losing 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the First Arena.

After a scoreless first period where the Jackals out-shot Quad City 11 to 8, the Mallards took charge to score three consecutive times. Andrei Lupandin scored at 4:52 of the second period, a power play goal for a 1-0 lead. Evgeny Lazarev scored another power play goal at 9:34 as penalties again plagued Elmira in the middle session. Anthony Blumer made it three at 10:37 and with the Jackals on the ropes, the mandatory media timeout was called. This seemed to refocus the team and a mere 32 seconds later Elmira was on the board. Defenseman Mike Dombkiewicz hammered home a shot through the legs of goaltender Terry Friesen, assisted by Eddy Lowe and Sam Paolini. Rookie sensation Jarrett Konkle brought the team back within a goal on the power play as he scorched a slap shot past Friesen at 14:11 for a 3-2 score.

But Quad City got a second 5-on-3 advantage less than a minute into the third period and the would not let it pass by. Chad Woollard, who scored the game-winning goal Saturday night, crushed a shot from the point into the top corner at 1:17, the Mallards third power play goal of the game. With the net empty and six skaters on the ice, Elmira put together a perfectly executed face-off play. Center Chris Chaput won the draw back to the left point, Dombkiewicz passed it to the top of the right face-off circle and where Sam Paolini sent a laser past Friesen with 58 seconds left on the clock. For the second straight night Elmira had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but despite two nail-biting scrambles in front of the Quad City goal, the Mallards held on for their third straight win.

Terry Friesen earned the win in his second appearance of the season, making 38 saves on 41 shots. Nick Boucher was 36-of-40 in the loss for the Jackals who dropped their fourth game in a row. Quad City had 21 penalty minutes as a team and finished 3-for-10 on the power play. Elmira was 1-for-7 and had 27 PIMs.

After a disappointing four games Elmira heads to Roanoke Wednesday November 9th for a mid-week match up with the Vipers before returning for two games against Richmond Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th at the First Arena. Sunday, November 13th Elmira is back in Virginia for another battle with Roanoke Valley.
