Jackals Drop Game Two Of Doubleheader
August 16, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
After taking the first game of the doubleheader 5-0, the Jackals fell short of their second win of the day in the nightcap, falling 5-3 to the visiting Quebec Capitales.
Dustin Birosak started for New Jersey on a pleasantly cool night at the ballpark. The lefty allowed five runs off 10 hits through three-and-a-third innings pitched. He drops to 3-5 this year.
The Capitales' starter, Jamie Richmond, left the game in the second with an apparent back injury. Richmond allowed two runs off one hit through one-and-two-third innings of work and earns the no-decision.
Chris Cox relieved Richmond and worked his longest outing of his professional career. In three-and-a-third innings, Cox allowed two runs off four hits to earn the win. He improves to 1-1.
Former Jackals pitcher TJ Stanton pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 14th save of the season.
The Capitales got on the board in the first thanks to an Josue Peley (pronounced OH-sway) RBI single. The Jackals quickly answered in the bottom of the frame, plating two to take the lead. Quebec came back to score two more in the next half inning via RBI singles by Jeff Helps and Sebastien Boucher. They'd get another pair of runs in the third inning to make the score 5-2.
Not mentioned was Jonathan Malo who was 3-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.
Francisco added an RBI single in the third inning and an RBI double in the fifth. Caraballo was 2-2 with three RBIs in game two, ending his day 5-6 with five RBIs.
Gaetano Giunta was 2-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
Unfortunately, that would be all the Jackals' bats could muster against the Capitales' bullpen.
With the loss, the Jackals drop the four-game set 3-1 to the visiting Capitales. New Jersey is now 49-36 this season while Quebec improves to 54-30. The Jackals trail the Capitales by five-and-a-half games in the Can-Am standings.
The Jackals continue their longest home stand of the season with a three-game set against the Worcester Tornadoes this weekend. Veteran Isaac Pavlik (10-2, 3.40) starts for New Jersey. Worcester sends out LHP Mike Gedman (3-3, 4.38). In addition to pitching, Gedman is hitting .444 in 36 plate appearances for Worcester this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the pregame beginning ten minutes prior.
