Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals twice overcame a one-goal deficit, only to lose in a 10-round shootout to the Adirondack Frostbite Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Playing in the second leg of the two-game exhibition series with the Frostbite, the Jackals took to the road for their final preseason tune up. Adirondack forward Mike Berry scored a power play goal four minutes into the game to give the home side an early lead. Two minutes later Jackals forward Eddy Lowe received a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for high sticking. The Jackals however pulled level when Sam Paolini tipped a shot from the point up over the blocker of the Frostbite goalie Derek Gustafson at 12:14.

In the second period the Jackals again began to take control, similar to their Friday night display at the First Arena. They out-shot the Frostbite in the period and led 23-21 after two, but it was Adirondack who took the lead into the locker room. With 6:15 remaining in the frame, Kevin Watters regained the upper hand for the Frostbite 2-1 with an unassisted-shorthanded tally for his third goal of the short preseason.

The Jackals would, however, exact their revenge in kind with a short-handed goal of their own. Just 27 seconds into the third period, Kevin Cooper snuck himself into a breakaway, neatly sliding a backhand through the legs of Gustafson to even the score at two. Goaltender Ryan McIntosh again shined as a third period substitute, making some stellar saves on multiple Adirondack breakaways. With just over a minute left in the game, Frostbite forward David Ambler was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for spearing, but Elmira failed to capitalize on the abbreviated power play.

With no further scoring during regulation, the teams turned to the UHL's game-deciding shootout. Defenseman Mike Dombkiewicz scored in round four for the Jackals, which sent the overtime session into sudden death mode. But in the 9th round, Patrick Steinmayr, the 18th shooter of the contest, beat McIntosh to give Adirondack a preseason sweep of the Jackals.

Adirondack goaltender Derek Gustafson stopped 25-of-27 for the win in his first preseason appearance, including 8-of-9 in the shootout. Elmira starter Nick Boucher made 19-saves on 21 shots through two periods for a no-decision. Third period substitute Ryan McIntosh blanked Adirondack in the third period with 8 saves, but was given the loss in the shootout, while stopping 7-of-9.

Disney On Ice: 100 Years of Magic is coming to Elmira. They will be presenting all the magic of Disney on the First Arena ice starting October 19th and running through October 23rd. The Jackals will start the 2005-06 UHL regular season Friday October 21st in Illinois against the Rockford Ice Hogs. Elmira will hit the ice at the First Arena for the home opener on Saturday October 29th at 7:05 pm against the Roanoke Valley Vipers.
