Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
ROANOKE, VA - Steve Crusco continued to showcase his offensive skills at SkateNation Plus in Richmond Saturday, scoring his third preseason goal in two games for the Vipers. Along with fellow-rookie Dave Shillington, who had two helpers Saturday night giving him a total of four points (1 G, 3 A) over the weekend, Crusco and the Vipers were not able to pull off a win as the RiverDogs continued to find ways to come up with big periods.
Richmond's Bret Peppler opened up scoring in the match with a power play goal at 8:09 into the first period. Vipers rookie Matt Miller struck with five seconds remaining in the first off passes from Matt Kenny and Jan Jas to even the score at 1-1.
Seventeen seconds into the start of the second, Crusco scored off a pass from Shillington. Richmond with a one-man advantage retaliated at 3:15 into the second, knotting the score once again at two apiece. Fourteen seconds later, the Vipers would take the lead for the last time as Shillington handed the puck to Czech Republic native Petr Jelinek who netted the shot for a shorthanded goal. The RiverDogs followed with three more goals before the period was over. Both teams remained quiet offensively in the third period.
Although game two was penalty-laced, the teams combined for 118 penalty minutes, compared to the 211 they put on the board on Friday. Roanoke was charged with just one major penalty during the match, while the RiverDogs were handed three 10-minute misconducts and two game misconducts.
