Isotopes Avoid Sweep, Defeat Z's, 6-4

Ivan De Jesus Jr. singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, and the Albuquerque Isotopes avoided a four-game sweep by defeating the New Orleans Zephyrs, 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Zephyr Field.

With the game tied 4-4 in the ninth, Jay Gibbons led off with a pinch-hit single. After Bradley Coon reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, De Jesus singled through the hole at shortstop, allowing Coon to score the eventual winning run.

Albuquerque tacked on an insurance run on an RBI single by Russ Mitchell.

The Isotopes got to Zephyrs starter Chris Sampson early, getting back-to-back homers from Jerry Sands and Mitchell with two out in the top of the first to take to take a 2-0 lead.

The Z's sliced the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with three straight singles to lead off the frame. Mike Cervenak grounded into a double to allow Jorge Padilla to score.

New Orleans took the lead in third when Padilla was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Vinny Rottino, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored on the afternoon.

Jose Lopez drove in Padilla with a sacrifice fly to right, and Rottino scored on an RBI double by Cervenak to take a 3-2 lead.

Albuquerque responded with a Dana Eveland RBI single up the middle to tie the game at three.

The two starters settled in, as Chris Sampson and Eveland each gave up three runs in six innings.

Sampson was attempting to become the first Zephyr pitcher to go 8-0.

Jose Lopez ran into trouble defensively in the eighth inning, failing to get to a high pop up in shallow right field, then committing a two-out fielding error to allow Albuquerque to take a 4-3 lead.

The Z's rallied again to tie the game in the bottom half, as Rottino led off with a walk and went to third on a hit-and-run by Lopez. Rottino scored on a force out by Aguila.

New Orleans attempted to rally again in the bottom of the ninth, getting the tying run on base with one out before Padilla bounced into a game-ending double play.

Joe Newby (2-5) received the win for Albuquerque, pitching two innings, giving up one run on one hit, and Jon Link earned his 11th save of the year.

Garrett Parcell (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs - two earned - in two innings.

The Zephyrs return to action on Wednesday night as they travel west for an eight-game road trip, taking on Tucson Padres for in the opener of a four-game set. Chris Volstad (1-0) takes the mound for the Z's as he faces off against Tucson's Jeremy Hefner (7-5).
