Hawaiian Islanders News Release

HONOLULU – The Hawaiian Islanders today announced the signings of two impact players that could significantly upgrade Hawaii's chances of repeating as af2 West Division champions.

Former Iolani School and University of Montana star Brian Ah Yat and St. Louis High School and Menlo College standout Gabe Amey will compete for starting positions this spring.

Ah Yat was most recently with the AFL's Chicago Rush and started one game in 2003. He also spent time with Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (1999-2001) as well as one season with the Hawaii Hammerheads of the IPFL (1999). With the Hammerheads, Ah Yat completed 64 percent of his passes (71-for-111) for 623 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In college, Ah Yat earned Associated Press first-team All-American honors following the 1996 season, in which he threw for 3,615 yards and a conference-record 42 touchdowns at Montana. He led the Grizzlies to a 14-1 mark losing only in the Division I-AA championship game against Marshall.

Amey spent 2003 with the Carolina Cobras (AFL) but suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for the entire season. He spent two seasons with the Macon Knights (af2). In 2001, he recorded 21 catches for 240 yards in five games while in 2002, he started 13 games and caught 82 passes for 1,104 yards and 23 touchdowns earning game MVP and Ironman honors twice.

At Menlo, Amey played four seasons and was the school's second leading career receiver with 2,987 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. He also ranked second in single-season receptions with 73 in 2000. He holds school records with 10 100-yard receiving games and 36 consecutive games with a reception.

"Getting Gabe and Brian are big pluses for our team," said Islanders Head Coach Cal Lee. "They both know what it takes to win and I think they'll make great additions to our team."
