Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Islanders' losing streak reaches four games as they drop their one game trip in Moncton 5-2.
Aksels Ozols earned his fourth start in five games, but allowed five goals on 25 shots with the majority of them being out of his control.
It was a slow start for the Isles. Moncton opened the scoring just under three minutes into the game as the puck took a weird bounce high into the air and it landed behind Ozols. Riley Sampson was credited with the goal.
Vince Collard then doubled the lead to 2-0 just over a minute later off of another strange bounce, shovelling the puck through Ozols.
Just six seconds later, Collard took a penalty, giving the Isles the first power play chance of the game. With the help of Wildcats goaltender Keegan Warren, Moncton was able to kill the man-advantage.
But 40 seconds after the penalty expired, it was right back to the power play for Charlottetown.
This time, Michael Horth capitalised. He ripped his eighteenth goal of the season low blocker side to bring the game back within one goal. Huckins and Michaud assisted on the marker.
Isaac Vos then gave Moncton their first power play of the game, but Ozols stayed strong for the Isles.
Charlottetown controlled play for the majority of the rest of the period, but ended the frame trailing in shots 10-7.
It was another quick start in the second period as Julius Sumpf beat Ozols in tight on the backhand, restoring their two-goal lead.
But the lead was extended to three goals four minutes later as Natan Grenier buried a tape-to-tape pass.
The Isles started to battle back. They gained momentum.
Giovanni Morneau picked a corner and ripped his eighth of the season with a shot in the slot. Horth had his second point of the night and Vos now has points in two straight games as they both recorded assists.
It was all Charlottetown for the rest of the period but Warren kept the door shut. Shots were tied at 23 apiece going into the second intermission.
The Isles picked right back up where they left off at the start of the third with shots from Morneau and Anton Topilnyckyj, both of which were turned aside.
Against the flow of play, Sumpf came up the left wing and got in all alone. He beat Ozols five-hole, giving Moncton a 5-2 lead.
The Isles were awarded a power play late in the game after Olivier Boutin took a slahing penalty.
Marcus Kearsey used his puck skills to dance around the Moncton defence but was shut down by Warren.
Charlottetown wasn't able to convert on the man advantage, and the Wildcats ended up winning 5-2.
The Isles held Moncton to just two shots in the third period and outshot them by a total of 31-25. The power play is returning to form for Charlottetown, going 1/3 on the man advantage.
The Islanders return home to play the Val-d'or Foreurs on Saturday, Nov. 25 as they will try to snap their four-game skid. Puck drop at the Eastlink Centre is at 7 p.m. Fans can tune into the game at MAX 93.1FM.
