San Jose Giants News Release
Travis Ishikawa singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning to send the San Jose Giants to a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Monday night. In front of 2,735 fans at Municipal Stadium, Ishikawa's hit scored Kyle Haines from third base to secure the series win for the Giants. Sergio Romo earned the victory out of the bullpen striking out five hitters over three scoreless innings of work. The win pushes San Jose's Second Half record to over .500 at 13-12.
With the game tied 3-3, Haines started the bottom of the 12th inning by drawing a four-pitch walk. Brian Bocock followed with a two-strike sacrifice bunt to move Haines to second base before Ben Copeland grounded out moving the potential winning run to third. Then Ishikawa stepped to the plate and drove a 1-2 pitch from Carlos Alvarez into the right center field gap to score Haines with the winning tally.
Ishikawa (2-for-6, RBI), Haines (2-for-5, 2B), and Pablo Sandoval (2-for-4, HR, RBI) all finished with more than one hit for the Giants. Sandoval connected for a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth - his ninth round-tripper of the season.
Romo (4-1) was superb out of the Giants bullpen. He worked through a pair of singles in the tenth inning before firing a perfect top of the 11th. Then in the 12th, Luke May led off by drawing a walk, but Romo recovered to set down the next hitters - including consecutive strikeouts of Russell Mitchell and Ryan Rogowski - to end the frame.
Jonathan Sanchez made his second rehab start with San Jose over the last three days. The left-hander, currently a relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, fired two shutout innings to begin the contest. Sanchez didn't allow a hit while walking one and striking out two.
Paul Oseguera, the originally scheduled starter, relieved Sanchez to begin the third with the Giants leading by a 2-0 score and promptly allowed three runs on four hits in his first inning. Ivan De Jesus brought home the first run with a single before Travis Denker's sacrifice fly to right plated the tying run. Then with two outs and a runner at third, Jamie Hoffmann singled sharply into left field to give the 66ers their first lead of the night at 3-2.
Oseguera though would settle down to hold Inland Empire scoreless over the next six innings. All total, the left-hander worked seven innings yielding three runs (all earned) on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Oseguera retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced before giving way to Romo to start the tenth.
The Giants jumped in front with a single run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Haines led off with a double and immediately scored when the next batter, Bocock, lined a triple down the right field line.
In the second, David Maroul started the inning with a double before eventually scoring on Cody White's two-out wild pitch. Then after Inland Empire went in front, Sandoval's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth brought the Giants even at 3-3.
San Jose had a number of opportunities late in the game to break the tie before Ishikawa's 12th inning single. In the eighth, the Giants left runners at second and third when Mike Mooney grounded out. Then in the ninth, Brad Boyer stepped to the plate with the potential winning run at third base and two outs, but was robbed of a hit when the second baseman Denker made a leaping catch on a sharp line drive.
In the 11th, the Giants rapped out a pair of singles while also reaching base on two walks, but Ishikawa was thrown out at home by the right fielder Hoffmann on Sandoval's single. Then Boyer grounded out to second base later in the inning to leave the bases loaded.
