Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC-- In a game full of both teams responding to each other's offenses, the Asheville Tourists got the best of the Intimidators in 10 innings, 7-6, Monday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
With Kannapolis' Parker Rigler cruising through the first three innings against the Asheville lineup, the Intimidators jumped on the board first behind a RBI single from Michael Hickman in the second, scoring Craig Dedelow, who reached base with a lead off double. The I's scored the second run of the ballgame in the third after Johan Cruz replaced and scored Tyler Frost from second base after his leadoff double.
With starter Will Gaddis of the Tourists holding off the Kannapolis lineup over the next two innings, using a 4-6-3 to get out of a jam in the fifth, Asheville began their scoring in the fourth. With Sean Bouchard on second after he reached on a double, Ramon Marcelino connected on one of his three doubles on the day to score Bouchard, part of a four-hit day overall for the Asheville right fielder.
Chad Spanberger delivered for his team with a solo-shot to right to begin the sixth and tie the game, 2-2. After a pair of walks issued by Yelmison Peralta (BS, 1), Marcelino came through again for his teammates and coaches, smacking another double to score Boswell to give the Tourists a 3-2 lead.
Later that inning, the Intimidators responded with a run of their own, using a RBI single from Tate Blackman to do so, scoring Justin Yurchak, who reached on an error. Asheville kept the scoring alive in the seventh, as Shael Mendoza reached on a leadoff bunt-single. Two batters later, Spanberger drove him in with a single of his own to untie the game, now 4-3.
After a 1-2-3 inning on offense for the I's in the seventh, they got back on the board in the eighth, using an unfamiliar RBI infield hit to do so. Off the bat of Evan Skoug, shortstop Ryan Vilade dove and deflected the ball off his glove with Nolan Brown at second base, allowing Brown to scoot to third safely. But Brown wasn't done just yet. With the ball trickling over to second base, Brown got the wave from Justin Jirschele around third and slid into home on the infield hit, tying the game, 4-4.
With Asheville plating a run in the top of the ninth, The I's responded in the bottom of the ninth when Tyler Frost scored in Hickman from second base to send the game into extras. With the new MiLB extra inning rules placing the last out of the ninth inning on second base to start out extra innings, both teams capitalized. Asheville knocked in two runs in the top of the tenth, digging Kannapolis in a 2-run deficit.
After scoring a run to cut the lead to one, Frost grounded out to first base with bases loaded to end the ballgame, with the potential tying run at third and the winning run at second.
The Intimidators and the Tourists will battle it out Tuesday night in the second game of the three-game series at 6:35 p.m.
