IronPigs Come Back in the 8th to Beat SWB 6-5

July 3, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Allentown, PA - For the second consecutive night, the Yankees scored first and failed to hang on for the victory. The Yankees held a 5-4 lead heading into the home half of the eighth, but a two run home half of the inning led the IronPigs to a 6-5 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning when Scranton/Wilkes-Barre third basemen Brandon Laird took IronPigs starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd deep, off of the advertising boards in left field above just above the Yankee bullpen.

The 1-0 lead didn't last for long as Ryan Howard provided his first two RBI on a long two-run shot way into the seats in left-center, giving Lehigh Valley the 2-1 advantage after four innings of play. The IronPigs offense didn't go away in the home half of the fifth either. Howard added a two-RBI double to right field for his fourth RBI of the game, which extended the IronPig lead to 4-1 heading into the top half of the sixth.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got two runs back in the top half of the sixth inning to come within 4-3 of the IronPigs. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Francisco Cervelli roped a two-RBI single to left field, improving to 3-6 with 9 RBI when hitting with the bases loaded.

Jack Cust then made things interesting by sending a line drive home run into the right field stands to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 5-4 advantage after 7 1/2 innings of play. However, the Yankees didn't enjoy the lead for long as the IronPigs struck right back in the home half of the eighth on a Cody Overbeck game tying RBI double off the centerfield wall off of Yankee reliever Manny Delcarmen. Lehigh Valley then took the lead 6-5 in the bottom half of the eighth on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Tuffy Gosewisch, plating Jeremy Barns.

Howard had a solid night in his third consecutive rehab appearance with Lehigh Valley. The Phillies first basemen went 2-3 with a double, home run and four RBI. Chris Dickerson and Cervelli each had two hits for the Yankees.

John Maine earned the no decision on the mound for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The veteran right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings. He stuck out three and walked one. Cloyd got the no decision for the IronPigs, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked one and stuck out four. Delcarmen got the loss for the Yankees, while J.C. Ramirez got the win for the IronPigs. Justin Friend picked up the save for Lehigh Valley.

With the win, Lehigh Valley became the second team in the International League to reach the 50 win mark in the 2012 season. With the loss, the Yankees are now 4.5 games behind the IronPigs for first place in the International League North. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Lehigh Valley head to the diamond for the finale of the "road" portion of the series against the IronPigs. Right-Hander Nelson Figueroa (5-2, 3.90) heads to the hill for the Yankees, while Scott Elarton (5-5, 4.60) takes the ball for the IronPigs. First pitch on Independence Day is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
